The SONOS S1 Controller is a free mobile app that was developed by audio products manufacturer, SONOS. This application is meant to be used with the company's line of smart speakers and audio devices. It serves as a means of controlling and updating the operating system that runs them. Through this tool, you will be able to manage multiple devices at once, as well as all your multimedia streaming sources in a single app.
Is S1 discontinued?
SONOS has been in the audio industry since 2002 and has manufactured various speakers and audio equipment through the years. It developed a software system so users will be able to control and manage the company's products. A companion mobile app was released together with the OS and it was simply called SONOS. It allowed users to perform various actions, such as adjusting volume levels, changing tracks, linking multiple devices together, setting alarms, and many more.
You can also control various streaming services such as Spotify, YouTube Music, and even SONOS Radio right from the app. Despite all its useful features, there are also some major issues with OS, the major one being instability and random powered downs of devices. This prompted the company to overhaul the operating system that would ship with newer devices. Thus, a new SONOS (also known as S2) software was introduced and the old one was renamed S1.
The S1 Controller is not discontinued and will still be maintained and updated with important bug fixes for older models. It won't receive any new feature updates, though as those will be reserved for future products. The devices falling under S1 are the Bridge, CR200, Connect, Connect:Amp, Play:5, and ZonePlayer line of audio products. Apart from these devices, all future releases will run the new S2 software and will be controlled by the SONOS app.
Old but not out
In conclusion, if you own any of SONOS' audio products preceding the S2 software, the SONOS S1 Controller will still be a relevant and useful app to you. You will be able to control these older models and still make the most out of them. You can also expect updates to continuously arrive and introduce fixes to long-standing bugs and issues.
